In total there are eight healthcare centres providing primary care and a number of hospitals providing secondary and tertiary care. The main teaching hospitals is St Luke’s with 850 beds. This is being replaced with a new (800-bed) hospital next to the University. In total there are about 2000 acute beds in Malta. There is a shortage of nurses but they have plenty of doctors

THE MEDICAL SCHOOL AND HOSPITALS:

The Medical School, St Luke’s Hospital, MSIDA, Guardamangia 06, Malta. Tel: +356 3290 2224 www.um.edu.mt This is the only Maltese Medical School and they are very well set up for arranging electives (and Socrates programmes). Write to: The Maltese Medical Students Association Exchange Committee at the above address or look at their web site (www.mmsa.org.mt) 
They operate an ‘exchange’ programme whereby they try to tie in one of their students going to your country. This is not a problem. If you arrange an exchange your accommodation is free, if not it’s about £3.75/night. Elective fees work out at £1.50/day. The Medical School provides the following specialities: medicine, neurology, O&G, paeds, cardiology, geriatrics, pathology, community medicine, public health, surgery, radiology, ENT, opthalmology, psychiatry, health information, dermatology, oncology, orhthopaedics, dentistry and casualty. They can be arranged in St Luke’s or in one of the other hospitals.
