Charité, established in the early eighteenth century, gets its name from
its humble beginnings as a pest house during the Plague. The medical
college, mainly for military personnel, was incorporated into Berlin
University in 1806. Initially the new medical college was separate from the
Charité and hence built new hospitals (such as the Surgical University
Clinic) which is still in use. Today this huge institution is spread over
three campuses, Charité Mitte, Virchow-Clinic, Berlin-Buch.

Originally founded as a military training institute in 1748, it was
refounded in 1954 as a medical school. New building work is trying to locate
everything on to one site.

The University (founded in the early twentieth century) uses a number of
specialist hospitals, including a neurology hospital. In total it has around
2000 beds.
Frankfurt

This huge medical centre (founded in 1914) has 1465 beds with 60
buildings. The medical college also uses another 13 hospitals in Frankfurt
itself.

The school’s main hospital is Klinikum der Albert-Ludwigs Universität
(Innere Medezin I, Hugstetter Strasse 55, Freiburg im Breisgau D-79106).
It’s a friendly place where students are given reasonable responsibility
and procedures (central lines, bone marrow aspirates) to do. In the
oncology/haematology department everyone (from consultants to domestics) has
breakfast together to discuss patients.
Giessen

Founded in 1607, Giessen has had an interesting history, including famous
scientists such as Roentgen, inventor of the X-ray. The new medical/surgical
centre is on campus hill with good views of the Taunus foothills and Lahn
valley. It has all major specialities, including cardiothoracic, trauma and
neurosurgery. The university is also affiliated with hospitals in nearby
towns. It has a forensic medicine department.

The Medical School of Hannover, although new (1965), has grown rapidly and
now has 1350 beds in its main clinic on campus as well as 18 other medical
centres over Hannover. All major departments and sports and forensic
departments are here. Specialist research includes that into inflammatory
bowel disease, CF and traffic accidents.
Heidelberg

Although founded in 1386 the University and medical
school had a slow start. In 1523 the entire University had 14 pupils. Today
there are seven departments of internal medicine (including sports medicine)
and the school uses 15 hospitals providing over 4000 beds in Heidelberg.

Homburg (in the far south-west of Germany, near France) has its hospital in
the south of the town centre situated in 200 hectares of woodland.
Originally founded in 1947 the hospital has 1500 beds and all specialities,
including forensic psychology and medicine.
Leipzig

Founded in 1414, this is the oldest medical school in Germany. It has
recently built a new heart centre with Europe’s largest ITU. Leipzig is a
beautiful city (population 700,000) and there is a good student life.

medical school.
Magdeburg

This relatively new medical college (1954) only became part of a University
in 1993. It uses 29 hospitals, 22 institutes and enrols 180 students a year.
It has specific interests in neuroscience and immunology research.

University Hospital is used by the Medical schooland provides all
major specialities. The town itself has a great student life, historic
buildings and is the place where printing was invented by Johannes
Gutenberg in the 14th/15th century. The website provides information
about the medical school, nursing school, school for physiotherapists
and associated departments.
Mannheim

medical school (part of the University of Heidelberg) in 1964. The
University hospital is the major teaching facility. Specialist interests
include transplant and minimal invasive surgery, psychiatry, imaging and
oncology. It has 2600 beds.
Munich

This is a very large faculty founded in 1826. Associated
with it is a large cancer centre. One of its peripheral hospitals is
Zentralklinikum, D-86009 Augsburg. It is a massive hospital on the outskirts
of Augsburg, a medium-sized city in the south of Germany. Here, previous
elective students have joined in with Munich student’s teaching. There are
some excellent pubs and plenty to do in the old town. If you want to get
out, Munich and the Bavarian Alps (good weekend skiing) are very close.

This new medical college (1970) uses a large clinical centre just outside
the city.
Tübingen

including the Medical University Clinic. In total it has access to 1500
