opened in 1944, is 10 kilometers west of the University and has 350 beds. It
offers a full range of services and is the largest centre for the treatment
of thalassaemia in the province.

The hospital: Deals
with the acute medical and surgical problems of the 100,000 employees of
this big gold and diamond conglomerate. It is in Welkom, a purpose-built
gold mining town. There are many admissions due to industrial accidents. The
life here is very Afrikaans but the miners speak Sootoo.

The train:
This is a train that travels around the
country at weekends and then sets up a clinic for the following week. It has
12 carriages, each with a different role. There is a health clinic, eyecare
clinic, dentist, pharmacy and X-ray carriages as well as living quarters. It
is run by nursing, dentistry and ophthalmology students under the
supervision of their tutors. There is a minimal fee for treatment but it is
very busy and serves a very worthwhile purpose to the communities it visits.note
– the train only runs between January and September.
